BAFFLING OLD AGE

2022

Oil on wood

60 x 50 cm

When the body no longer follows, it is the memory that continues to sit with us.

In stark tones of black, white and grey, Baffling old age is not just a portrait—it is a testimony. Painted in oil, this intimate scene captures the daily life of an elderly woman anchored to the sofa, surrounded by pillows, blankets and her walker—a symbol of support but also of helplessness. The scuffed paint, almost as if it were fading over time, evokes the fragility of memory and the erosion of days. However, there are details that resist wear and tear: the hand swollen from illness, motionless but present; the iron of the walker, cold and necessary.
Between the blur of the material and the sharpness of the condition, the paradox of old age is revealed—where the body fails but dignity persists. This work does not shout, but whispers profound truths: about waiting, dependence, the silence of the end, and the hard beauty of simply still being.
